U.S. waste imports fall sharply by 2.5 million short tons in 2019

On February 5, the U.S. Census Bureau, part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, released trade data. In 2019, the total export volume of U.S. waste paper, including OCC, mixed paper, newsprint, etc., totaled 18.1 million short tons, a year-on-year decrease of 2.9 million short tons. This is the smallest year since 2006, and the largest decline since 2000.
There is no doubt that the main reason for the sharp decline in U.S. waste exports is the decrease in imports from the Chinese market. In 2019, compared with 2018, China’s imports of us waste decreased by 2.5 million short tons, accounting for 86.2% of the total reduction. Another reason is that in the past 18 months, more and more countries and regions have implemented measures to restrict the import of waste paper, thus reducing the import of waste paper from the United States.
From the perspective of waste paper types, the export volume of OCC (11 waste paper in the United States) decreased the most, with a decrease of 1.9 million short tons in 2019 compared with 2018. In 2018, the export volume of OCC increased by 2.6 million short tons compared with 2017, reaching a record high of 12.5 million short tons.
By country and region, the largest export market of us waste is still China, with a total of 5.8 million short tons. As for other countries, India has 3.3 million short tons, Mexico 1.5 million short tons, Vietnam 1.2 million short tons, South Korea 1.1 million short tons, Taiwan 1 million short tons, Indonesia 990000 short tons, Canada 950000 short tons, Thailand 580000 short tons.
