Spain’s waste paper recycling rate reaches 78%

In recent years, the Spanish paper industry has made significant progress in the field of paper recycling, with the overall national paper recycling rate reaching 78%, exceeding the voluntary target of 76% set by Europe for 2030.

In a recent interview with local media, Elisabet Alier, President of the Spanish Association of Pulp and Paper Manufacturers (Aspaper), said that the Spanish paper industry currently has 10 pulp mills and 69 paper mills, producing a wide variety of paper, mainly using renewable, recyclable, and local raw materials.

Elisabet Alier said, “Of our paper raw materials, 95% of wood and 69% of recycled paper come from Spain. By processing these local resources, we have created wealth for the country and contributed to industrial independence, which is particularly important during the pandemic. Through paper and wood plantations, we have also created employment opportunities and wealth for Spain.”

In 2021, the total consumption of wood used for papermaking in Spain increased by 2.2% over the previous year.
