US printing demand drops more than 60 billion US dollars, but demand of 2021 top 100 printing buyers increases

Recently, printing impressions magazine of the United States published the list of top 100 printing buyers in the United States in 2021. This forecast based list is of great value for us to understand the changes in printing demand in the US market.

Printing demand grows again

The list shows that in 2021, the top 100 printing buyers in the United States are expected to purchase 56.211 billion US dollars of printed materials, an increase of 2.66% over the same period of 2020, accounting for 28.7% of the total printing demand of the United States of America of 139.768 billion US dollars.

Among them, the total printing demand of the top 10 printing buyers is estimated to be 12.762 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 13%, accounting for 22.7% of the 100 enterprises, and the proportion has further increased.

Novel coronavirus pneumonia is a key factor that needs to be pointed out. The total US demand for printing in 2021, which is US $139 billion 768 million, has dropped considerably compared with that of the US $207 billion 606 million in 2020.

New changes in subdivision

Despite the impact of novel coronavirus pneumonia, street violence, double debt and election anxiety on the US economy, there are also some new changes in the top 100 printing buyer companies in the “lost year”. The most obvious area is the oligopoly of many logistics / freight entities.

In addition, among the top 100 printing buyers, health and food / beverage sectors accounted for the highest proportion of printing demand, accounting for 27.2% and 19.2% respectively. These two areas occupy more than one fifth of the label and packaging market.

In the list, the printing demand of the top 25 enterprises accounts for nearly half of the total printing demand of the top 100 printing buyers, and may exceed 1 / 6 of the total printing demand of the United States. Moreover, overall printing growth will focus on personal care, healthcare / pharmaceuticals and safety / security. However, the catering service sector suffering from the epidemic situation can only recover to 2 / 3 of the previous scale.

The areas most affected by the permanent impact will be commercial and retail real estate (expected to decline by 28%), as well as any activities that rely on imports or foreigners. Printing demand in the automotive, fashion, travel / hotel and higher education sectors could fall by a quarter or more.

Top 10 printing buyers change a lot

Overall, the top 10 enterprises in this list are basically consistent with the list in 2020.

A year later, the U.S. post service replaced at & T to return to the top of the list; Pfizer Inc., Uline and McDonald’s Corp. fell out of the top 10, while Wal Mart, Amazon and 3M Co. entered the top 10.

Next, let’s focus on the analysis of the top 10 enterprises in this list and their competitors in the same field in 2021.

According to the list, the U.S. Postal Service will become the largest printing buyer in history and return to the top of the list. According to the forecast, in 2021, the operating revenue of the U.S. post office will be 71.2 billion U.S. dollars, with a year-on-year increase of 6%; and the printing demand will reach 1.978 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 33%. Priority mail, parcels and international mail and transportation services will stand out in the next two years.

In contrast, FedEx Corp., another logistics giant, ranked 21st with a printing demand of US $800 million and a growth rate of 27%; UPS ranked No. 40 with a printing demand of US $556 million, a year-on-year decrease of 9%.

PepsiCo International ranked second with us $1.697 billion in printing demand, with a year-on-year increase of more than 40%. Thanks to the increased time at home caused by the epidemic, PepsiCo’s sales of snacks and soft drinks have increased, together with the acquisition of alternative brands and alcoholic beverage brands, making it a demander for large flexible packaging, metal decoration and retail outlets.

This success was largely at the expense of 11% of the printing demand of its competitor, Coca Cola combined, which ranked 48th. In 2021, Coca Cola’s printing demand is expected to be $520 million.

Walt Disney Co. took the last place in the top three. In 2021, the printing demand of Walt Disney Company is 1.443 billion US dollars, an increase of 43.09% compared with 2020.

At & T, the fourth largest company on the list in 2020, once topped the list with $1.492 billion in printing demand. In 2021, its printing demand was $1.324 billion, down 13% year-on-year. At & T’s total revenue, meanwhile, is expected to decline by 7%. The company is cutting discretionary costs, including printing, and ending creative jobs in its East and West Coast entertainment business.

Johnson & Johnson ranked fifth. In 2021, the company’s printing demand is expected to be $1.285 billion, up 17% year-on-year. Johnson & Johnson has promised to produce the new coronavirus vaccine “on a non-profit basis”, but with that comes an increase in packaging costs. In 2021, Johnson & Johnson’s demand for labels and packaging will exceed $900 million, and its consumer health products, especially health and protection products, will continue to grow by more than 20%.

Pfizer, which is in the same pharmaceutical field as Johnson & Johnson, ranked seventh in the list in 2020, only ranked 15th in the list in 2021. Its printing demand was $910 million, down 9% year on year. Not long ago, Pfizer’s new coronavirus vaccine was launched. It is reported that the vaccine can prevent 90% of the new coronavirus infection, and is expected to be popularized in large scale by the end of this year and early next year. It remains to be seen whether the vaccine can bring about an increase in printing demand.

Procter & Gamble ranked sixth, up two places compared with 2020. Its printing demand in 2021 was $1.039 billion, up 5% year on year. In the post epidemic era, people pay more attention to health work, which also provides many advantages for the increase of printing demand of P & G.

Wal Mart (Walmart) rose from 27th in 2020 to 7th in 2020, with the biggest increase in the top 10. In 2021, Wal Mart’s printing demand is expected to be $1.010 billion, up 57% year on year. The traditional supermarket was not affected by the epidemic, but its e-commerce revenue increased by 73%. In contrast, Costco, its rival, saw a 7% drop in printing demand, ranking 52nd with $490 million.

Apple Inc. fell two places to eighth place, the only electronics company in the top 10. Although the iPhone 12 has a lot of functions upgraded and the market response is good, due to the extension of the replacement cycle caused by the epidemic and the reduction of Apple packaging, the printing demand of Apple company in 2021 is 1.013 billion US dollars, which is nearly 4% lower than that of last year.

Amazon, the retailer, ranked ninth, up two places. Its printing demand will rise by 5% to $993 million in 2021. According to analysts, Amazon will soon become the fourth largest direct delivery carrier and corrugated box manufacturer in the United States, and its cross-border development capability based on the Internet remains a concern.

In addition, in this list, FCA Fiat Chrysler America ranked 100th with us $215 million in printing demand.
