In the first six months of 2021, the export volume of recycled fiber in the United States increased significantly year-on-year, and the exporting countries are mainly India and Thailand.
According to the export data from January to June 2021 released by the Census Bureau of the US Department of Commerce last week, the export volume of recycled fiber jumped from 7.4 million tons in the first half of 2020 to 9 million short tons this year, but it is still lower than the data before 2020.
According to the data, India’s total import of recycled fiber to the United States increased significantly. In the first half of 2021, the total import reached 2.4 million short tons, accounting for more than 1 / 4 of the total export of waste fiber in the United States in the same period. In the first half of 2020, the country imported 970000 short tons of American recycled fiber.
In the first half of 2021, Mexico (1.1 million short tons), Thailand (1.04 million short tons), Vietnam (1.02 million short tons), Taiwan (490000 short tons), Canada (483000 short tons), South Korea (403000 short tons), Malaysia (390000 short tons) and Indonesia (326000 short tons) were the main countries and regions importing recycled fiber from the United States.
Thailand’s imports of waste from the United States also increased significantly, with an increase of 260% in the first half of 2021 over the 288000 short tons imported in the same period in 2020.
Local industry insiders said that the import growth of these countries and regions is easing the impact of China’s waste ban on the waste paper recycling industry in the United States, and is expected to leave more space for the global fiber export market. However, compared with the export volume in the first half of 2017, the last period of China’s waste prohibition order, the total export volume of waste fiber from the United States to China decreased by 12% in 2021. At present, the import of recycled fiber into China has been officially prohibited. In 2017, China accounted for 66% of all U.S. fiber exports, while in the same period this year, China accounted for only 3% of U.S. fiber exports.

The export of recycled pulp from the United States is continuing. This is another business model selected after the waste paper crisis in the United States, that is to complete the collection and pulping of recycled fiber in the United States, and then export it.
In the first half of 2021, the United States exported 205000 short tons of recycled pulp, which was the same as 203000 short tons exported in the same period last year. China is the main importer, accounting for 83% of them, and Canada accounts for 12%.
