The epidemic continues to stimulate the demand for packaging paper in Russia

According to local media reports in Russia, the continuing epidemic and ecological problems have further created conditions for the Russian paper packaging market and stimulated the growing demand for packaging paper.

According to the data of the Russian Paper Manufacturers Association (bumprom), the output of industrial paper in Russia increased significantly in 2020, of which the output of packaging paper increased the fastest, with a year-on-year increase of 20%. Among the packaging paper, the paper bag paper increased by 36%, and the bleached paperboard used for corrugated packaging increased by 83%. In addition, the output of other paperboards increased by 15%, and the output of tissue and toilet paper increased by 10%.

With the continuous growth of output, the price of paper packaging in Russia’s domestic market is also rising. In 2020, the average price of packaging paper increased by 30%. Since December 2020, the market price has been increasing at a rate of 5% – 15% per month. This phenomenon has prompted many domestic paper mills to start transformation. For example, Volga paper mill in Russia mainly produces newsprint. In 2020, the output of newsprint accounts for 80% of the total output. Recently, it has planned to increase the production capacity of packaging paper and increase the share of packaging paper to 60%, so as to adapt to the growth of domestic packaging paper demand in Russia. Analysts believe that the growth of packaging paper demand in Russia is mainly related to e-commerce sales and the trend of paper replacing plastic.
