Seizing the business opportunities brought by the trend of “plastic removal”, Japan is taking action to replace plastic with paper

Japanese media said that seizing the business opportunities brought by the trend of “plastic removal”, Japanese paper enterprises have developed paper products that can replace plastics. In Japan, plastic bags have been introduced since July to reduce the cost of plastic bags. At the same time, the demand for printed paper is declining, which makes paper enterprises feel crisis.

According to Asahi Shimbun on July 3, Japanese paper companies began selling paper containers such as shampoo in February this year. This is a product for accommodation facilities. Compared with previous sub containers, paper sub containers can reduce the use of plastic by 25% to 40%.

Japanese paper companies are also developing paper straws and milk cartons that are easy to drink milk without straws, the report said. The company’s goal is to reach tens of billions of yen in sales of plastic container substitutes in the future.

Nestle (Japan) chose paper products made by Prince holding company to replace the original plastic box of qiqiqiao chocolate waffle biscuits, which Prince holdings announced in January. At the end of last year, Prince holdings launched a thin transparent paper folder that uses 70% less plastic. Now, the company is developing paper bags that can further improve oil and water resistance.

According to the report, the background for Japanese paper enterprises to vigorously develop plastic substitutes lies in the continuous development of paperless and the reduction of paper demand in printing. According to the statistics of Japan paper making Federation, domestic paper demand including yellow board paper has decreased by 20% in the past decade. In particular, the demand for paper such as copy paper has decreased significantly, with a decrease of more than 30% in the 20 years up to 2019.

“We hope to publicize the advantages of paper for environmental protection, and hope that paper can be widely used instead of plastics,” said Nozawa, President of the Japan paper making Federation, at a press conference in June.
