Russia’s paper industry has been in the doldrums for a whole year and may start to recover in 2021

According to Russian local media on December 4, according to the main local pulp and paper manufacturers and analysts, due to the epidemic situation and domestic economic downturn and other reasons, Russia’s paper industry also maintained a downturn in 2020, but the industry may start to recover in 2021.

Compared with that in 2019, the growth rate of Russia’s paper industry this year is less than 2-3%, mainly due to the impact of the epidemic situation, many investment projects have been put on hold, most of which are the capacity expansion projects of local paper enterprises and international paper giants in Russia. With the development of vaccine and the control of epidemic situation, the shelved projects may gradually resume, which will make the Russian paper industry recover and develop in 2021.

According to the data of the Russian Federation State Bureau of Statistics (rosstat), since 2016, the total investment of Russian domestic pulp and paper enterprises has been 70-80 billion rubles (about 1-1.3 billion US dollars), most of which are technology upgrading and transformation projects of paper enterprises. But the epidemic may have a negative impact on industry investment in the next few years.
