Russia faces serious paper shortage

According to recent news from some local publishers and media in Russia, the lack of paper will bring the publication of Russian books into a collapse.

In recent months, Russian offset paper was short, resulting in a 12-20 per cent rise in market prices.

Some Russian media say local publishers have suspended the issuance of new books due to a lack of paper, which should be published in the first half of this year.

In addition to book publishers, the paper shortage has also affected other industries in Russia, especially the cardboard packaging industry.

As there are many types of paper in Russia that they cannot produce, the situation is further worsened.

According to official data, 80 percent of the products, including books, offset paper for manual printing, label paper and cardboard for packaging, need to be imported.

So far, the countries that supply these paper varieties to Russia are mainly China and Europe, and the outbreak of the epidemic has led to a sharp reduction in the number of exports.

Currently, Russia has 25% of the world’s forestry resources, but the paper industry in Russia is basically undeveloped.
