Rapid recovery of softwood log exports in Australia

Australia’s exports of softwood logs surged to a new record in June, with a total export volume of 590700 cubic meters, an increase of 83% over the same period last year. Compared with last month, the growth rate was 27%, about 110000 cubic meters. In May 2020, Australia’s total log exports reached 553000 cubic meters, an increase of 68% over the previous month, but only 2.2% higher than that in May 2019. Part of the reason for the rapid growth is the push from domestic buyers. Up to may, Australia’s timber exports have been on a downward trend in the past few months.

With the growth in May and the substantial boost in June, the total export volume in 2019-2020 will be 3.723 million cubic meters. Although up 2.8% year-on-year, the slowdown in exports at the end of 2019 and early 2020 means that the annual export volume is still far below the peak level of 4.072 million cubic meters in the same period in September 2017. Whether from Australia or New Zealand, the market demand is better than at the beginning of the year, although there are reports that the current timber inventory is huge, because of the fear that the repeated outbreak may lead to the closure, which will cause a shortage of supply sometime in the second half of 2020.
