Printing Paper Continues To Fall And Packaging Paper Continues To Rise

Recently, the American Forest Paper Association (AF & PA) issued several industry reports or data, including the April printing and writing paper report, April packaging paper report, the 61st paper production capacity and fiber consumption report and 2020 paper industry recovery. The important data are as follows:

Main data of printed writing paper report in April 2021:

Compared with last year:

Total print and writing paper shipments fell by 3 percent

Total purchase of printed and written paper decreased by 6%

Increase of purchase of uncoated free paper (UFS) paper by 13%

CFS paper delivery volume decreased by 17%

Coating machinery (CM) paper purchase decreased by 35%

21% less um paper delivery

Compared with March 2021:

Total inventory of printed paper decreased by 2%

Uncoated free paper (UFS) inventory level down 3%

CFS inventory level down 1%

The inventory of coated machinery (CM) paper decreased by 3%, import and export decreased by 9% and 29% respectively

The inventory level of uncoated machinery (UM) paper increased by 12%, import and export decreased by 1% and 47% respectively

Main data of packaging paper report in April 2021:

The total volume of packaging paper and special packaging increased by 4% in April compared with that of the same period in 2020, by 1%.

The starting rate in April was 95.1%, an increase of 9.6 points year-on-year, and an increase of 5.2% from the beginning of the year to the present.

At the end of April, the inventory of the factory increased by 9000 short tons compared with last month, an increase of 20000 short tons year on year.

Note: 1 short ton = 0.907 tons

Main data of paper production capacity and fiber consumption report in phase 61:

The overall paper and board capacity in the United States will drop 1.6% in 2020, and the annual average decline of 1.1% since 2011.

In 2020, the capacity of carton and board will continue to expand for ten years, setting a record of 40.4 million tons. The capacity of toilet paper has risen for five years in a row, and in the past 10 years, 8 years have increased.

The consumption of recycled fiber in the U.S. plant will reach 22.8 million tons in 2020, the second highest level in the past decade. The biggest power source of growth is corrugated paper.

Paper paper is the only drop in packaging grade last year, but surveys show a slight pick-up in 2021.

With the development of electronic communication industry, the capacity of newsprint and printing paper will decrease in 2020 and decline for 10 consecutive years. Some paper machines that produce printed and written paper have been or are being reused for the production of box board and packaging paper.

The results show that the total capacity of paper and board will remain unchanged in 2021.

Main data of paper recycling in 2020:

In 2020, 65.7% of the paper consumption in the United States is recycled. Since 2009, the paper recycling rate in the United States has not been less than 63%, which is now twice the recovery rate of American paper industry in 1990.

The consumption of old corrugated boxes (OCC) in American factories will reach 22.8 million tons in 2020. The recovery rate of OCC is 88.8%, and the average value in recent three years is 92.4%.
