Packaging paper in short supply in Europe

The novel coronavirus pneumonia has changed people’s consumption habits. In the UK, many people are used to online shopping, which has led to a surge in demand for paper boxes. However, due to the outbreak, the UK carton supply shortage, recycling is also facing difficulties.

In the UK, with the extension of the epidemic blockade period, online shopping is becoming more and more common. From potted plants to bicycles, they are all packaged and sent directly to consumers’ homes. The surge of online orders has greatly boosted the demand for packaging cartons. Many businesses said that due to the urgent carton, they have been unable to deliver. Some wine retailers and toy retailers in the UK have to extend the delivery time from two days to one week to cope with the logistics problems of packaging cartons.

Simon Eileen, CEO of recycling UK: people used to go to toy stores to buy goods and take them away in a bag. Now it’s different. If consumers buy 10 toys online, businesses may need 10 independent cartons to send the goods home.

At a carton company in Birmingham, the UK, staff are working overtime to process online packing orders. According to the staff, there are three large trucks in the warehouse every day, which can receive and deliver cartons more than six times, but still can not meet the market demand.

Mike, managing director of suderes carton Co., Ltd., UK: our pre arranged orders are now in June, which has never happened before. The price of packing cases has increased by 6% to 7%, and we have considered a new round of price adjustment, because the demand for the whole year of 2021 is too high.

Mike, the person in charge, said that the warehouse was full at this time last year. Now two thirds of the cartons have been sold, and many of the cartons were ordered in December last year. At present, the demand in the market is too high, but the supply is very limited. The delivery of these goods has been delayed for nearly two months.

It is understood that the raw materials of some packaging cartons in the UK need to be imported from Germany and the Netherlands. In the second half of 2020, the paper available for packaging inventory in Europe has decreased by 20%, and the whole market is in short supply. The British Paper Industry Federation believes that with the recovery of European paper production capacity in 2021 and the lifting of the blockade, supply will be expected to reach a balance.
