New EU Packaging Law: plastic tableware is prohibited, and deposit is required for all beverage packages

Last March, the European Parliament passed a high vote ban on the use of disposable plastic products. Starting from June 3, 2021, disposable plastic products such as plastic tableware, straws, balloon rods and oxidation degradable plastic food containers are prohibited. According to the content of the bill, the plastic bottle recovery rate of EU Member States must reach the target value of 90% by 2029, and at least 25% of renewable components must be contained in plastic bottles by 2025, and 30% by 2030. The European Union’s increasingly serious marine pollution problem is expected to be alleviated.

Recently, Svenja Schulze, the Federal Minister of environment, announced in an interview with the media that Germany’s current packaging law would be amended. According to the new amendment, in the future, paper cups and plastic bags widely used in the catering industry will be replaced by reusable environmental protection products. In addition, Germany will further expand the implementation of beverage packaging deposit system.

As long as the restaurant serves more food or drinks, it will have to be recycled. “People are used to throwing when they’re done, and now we have to put in place effective legislation to get everyone out of this wasteful habit,” he said

Under the new amendment, the number of customers who sell their own dinnerware is not less than 3 square meters. However, the number of employees who sell their own dinnerware is not less than 3 square meters. Food that can only be sold in tinfoil packaging is also out of the ban. At present, the draft amendment has been submitted to the relevant industry associations, and the details of the specific regulations need to be further determined.

In addition, Germany will cancel the remaining disposable beverage packaging. Consumers have to pay a deposit for bottles of juice, wine, champagne, mixed drinks and spirits. According to the amendment, from 2025, all plastic bottles with a capacity of less than 3 liters must contain at least 25% renewable ingredients. By 2030, the proportion of recycled components must reach 30%.

According to reports, the latest amendments to the German “packaging law” are in line with relevant EU packaging laws, and some regulations are even more stringent. The Federal Environment Department expects the amendment to take effect as early as next summer, but it will have to be approved by the federal cabinet and the Bundestag before that.
