According to the statistical data recently released by the Japan paper making Federation, in 2020, Japan’s domestic paper and paperboard shipment volume was 21.44 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 9.9%, the lowest level since 1988.
Affected by the spread of COVID-19 throughout the year, demand for office paper, such as photocopying paper, has dropped significantly. Combined with the expansion of telecommuting, the shipment of 18 kinds of printing and information paper, including copy paper, dropped to 5.58 million tons, a sharp drop of 18.9% year on year.
The shipment volume of corrugated paper and other kinds of paperboard was 10.73 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 5.1%.
On the other hand, due to the implementation of the epidemic prevention and control measures, the market demand increased. The shipment volume of tissue paper and tissue paper was 1.83 million tons, which was roughly the same as that of the same period last year.
