Europe’s timber exports add new initiatives

At present, China is the world’s largest wood processing, wood products production base and the most important wood processing export country, but also the world’s major wood importing country. The wood sources are diversified, and the wood from Europe, Russia and North America occupy the main share of the imported wood market.

The huge market and development potential of domestic imported wood and wood products have attracted the attention of many global wood enterprises and organizations, including lef Network China, a Sino European wood industry cooperation project from Europe. This project is composed of enterprises and organizations from three countries: Latvian, Estonian and Finnish.

The lef Network China project believes that China, as a big country of timber import and consumption, has the potential of high value-added wood products, which has not been fully valued and developed. China’s high value-added wood products market will be the most potential market in the future. Lef Network China brings together nearly 80 timber and wood products companies from three countries, namely, Latvian, Estonian and Finnish. The companies have accumulated rich experience in wood processing, wood structure construction and furniture, especially in the aspect of CLT (cross laminated timber), the modern mainstream engineering timber.

European organizations participating in the project include: Latvian business association, Satakunta University of Applied Sciences, Estonian business association, Latvian timber building cluster and Estonian wooden house association.

The project aims to increase the cooperation opportunities between EU wood enterprises and Chinese enterprises, improve the docking and cooperation ability between Baltic Wood enterprises and Chinese wood enterprises, and promote the growth of European wood enterprises’ exports of high value-added wood products to China.

At the just concluded China (Shanghai) Construction Expo, the lef China cooperation network project brought a number of wood products from Latvian, Estonian and Finnish countries to the exhibition. With the unique material characteristics of wood, combined with the Nordic design style and concept, it demonstrated the vitality of wood, an ancient traditional building material, under modern science and technology. The outdoor wooden house and garden design on site bring different design concepts and styles to domestic exhibitors and decoration companies.
