European Parliament passes resolution to stop global deforestation

In july2020, the European Commission on environment, public health and food safety (envi) submitted a report on legislative initiatives seeking EU Commission legislation to stop and reverse EU driven global deforestation. The initiative proposes a legal framework based on due diligence to ensure that products launched into the EU market are sustainable and forest free supply chains. The initiative also noted that the European Union Timber regulations (eutr) are a good model for reference and need to consider lessons learned to improve implementation and enforcement rules. The committee voted to adopt the proposal by Parliament on 22 October 2020. The Commission is also considering several policy options other than the due diligence methodology proposed by parliament, including mandatory labels, voluntary commitments and labels, and verification plans and methods for PEF and OEF.
