Recently, Australian MP Trevor Evans revealed on social media that the Australian house of Representatives has passed the recycling and waste reduction bill 2020. This would ban Australia from exporting 40000 containers of waste overseas each year.
Next, the bill will go through the Senate. Once approved by the Senate, Australia will permanently ban the export of waste, including plastics, glass, paper and tires, from January 1, 2021. This is Australia’s world leading approach to environmental issues, which is to manage their own waste.
Mr Evans commented that this is a great milestone for the environment, an important next step for Australia and the first recycling law in Australia!
The new law will also serve as a catalyst for a series of new recycling programs to manage how products are designed and disposed of at the end of their life cycle (known as product management). That is to say, from the beginning of product design, the recyclability of products should be considered to realize the design of recyclability of products, which will be the best way to solve the plastic pollution under the current predicament and realize the recycling of resources.
Through this management of turbocharged products, Australian consumers will be able to more easily recycle thousands of products that are currently landfilled. This will not only greatly reduce landfills, but also create new green jobs and help the environment by recycling valuable resources from these products.
