Australian supermarket giants Woolworth, Coles and Aldi and major food manufacturers have promised to make all plastic packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.
Under a broader industry anzpac plastic agreement, plastic packaging waste sent to landfills and into the river sea will be eliminated.
Andrew and nicolaforrest’s minderoo foundation released a report saying 100 companies accounted for 90 per cent of global disposable plastic production.
In 2019, more than 130million tonnes of plastic were discarded, almost all of which were burned, buried in garbage stacks or directly dumped in natural environments.

Under the leadership of the Australian packaging convention Organization (APCO), the members of the new convention have committed themselves to achieving four operational objectives by 2025: eliminating unnecessary and problematic plastic packaging through redesign, innovation, etc; Ensure 100% of plastic packaging can be recycled, reused or compostable; Increase the current collection and recycling of plastic packaging by at least 25%; And ensure that the new plastic packaging contains an average of 25% of the recyclable ingredients.
