Analysis of corrugated packaging industry in Europe and how China’s carton industry will move forward

In recent years, many domestic associations or media organizations have visited advanced corrugated box enterprises in developed countries and regions such as Europe, America and Japan. When they come back, they are always filled with emotion. They think that the corrugated box enterprises in Europe and America have a high degree of automation and intelligence, and that the management of Japanese corrugated box enterprises is really worth learning.

According to the data published by the European Federation of corrugated box manufacturers in 2018 (the data for 2019 have not been released yet). The overall data of European corrugated box industry in 2018 are as follows (according to the author’s observation, the countries shown in the data mainly include Austria, Benelux, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Poland, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, Britain, etc. Russia should not be included)

The total shipping volume of corrugated boxes is 48.177 billion square meters or 24.307 million tons

About 369 Corrugated Box Companies in total

A total of about 630 corrugated box processing plants (missing data from Benelux)

The number of tile lines is about 448, including 24 under 2m, 320 between 2-2.5m and 74 above 2.5m (incomplete data, missing data from France, Poland and Turkey)

The average weight of corrugated board is about 505g / m2

The consumption of base paper is about 20.766 million tons

The total number of corrugated box industry employees is about 103202, and the production staff is about 69450

In European countries, as far as the output of corrugated board is concerned, Germany is the number one and also the core of corrugated packaging industry in Europe. In 2018, the output of corrugated board reached 10.625 billion, 52.7% higher than that of Italy, which ranked second. Closely followed by Italy and Spain, the output reached 7.004 billion square meters and 5.286 billion square meters in 2018. In addition, the output of France and Britain, the traditional powers, are 5.151 billion square meters and 5.007 billion square meters respectively. Turkey’s output also reached 4.357 billion square meters, surpassing Poland’s by 63.12% compared with its 2671 million square meters in 2014.

In terms of the number of carton enterprises in European countries, Turkey’s number of carton enterprises ranked first, reaching 88, becoming the real “carton processing base” in Europe. It was followed by 72 in Spain and 44 in Germany. In addition, Italy’s 43 and Poland’s 40 ranked fourth and fifth respectively.

In terms of the number of secondary carton factories in European countries, Germany ranked first, while Turkey ranked second. Here is an illustration of the problem: more group companies have set up multiple factories in Germany. Therefore, in general, the number of group companies may not be large, but the number of secondary factories under it is very large. On average, a company has nearly three factories. On the contrary, in Turkey, there are many enterprises of different brands, large and small. Therefore, the total number of enterprises reaches 88, while the number of secondary factories reaches 110, with an average of 1.25 factories in a company. Spain, Italy, Britain and France rank third to sixth, with 90, 69, 67 and 62 secondary factories respectively.

From the perspective of tile production lines in European countries, except for France, Poland and Turkey, which have not published corresponding data, we must admit that the tile lines of these three countries should account for a fairly high proportion of the total tile production in Europe, especially in Turkey and Poland, as can be seen from the number of secondary factories above. However, we still need to study the general situation of Europe. Among the 448 tile lines known, tile lines with a width of 2-2.5m still occupy the majority, with 320 lines accounting for 71.43%, while 54 tiles with a width of less than 2m account for about 12.05%, and 74 tiles with a width of more than 2.5m account for about 16.52%.

In terms of the average gram weight of corrugated board in European countries, Italy is the highest, about 555g / m2, and the UK is the lowest (about 429g / m2), which is about 29.37% lower than the former, which has a great relationship with the terminal industries of the two countries. In 2018, the average weight of corrugated board in Europe is about 505g / m2.

In terms of the per capita output of various countries, the per capita output of Italy has reached 1112000 square meters, and even Hungary, which has the lowest per capita output, has reached 434000 square meters. Generally speaking, the per capita production capacity of European corrugated box industry is at a high level. According to the number of employees in 103202 and 48.177 billion square meters in Europe, the per capita production capacity reaches 466800 square meters per year.

According to the inventory, Rongcheng, Shanying, Zhenglong, Jingxing, Zhengye, Shengda Who sells the most expensive cartons? Even if Rongcheng Paper Co., Ltd., which has the lowest average price of cartons, calculates that the output value of 466800 square meters is about 1455000 yuan. If the per capita output of 1.112 million square meters in Italy is calculated, the annual output value of each person is about 3.466 million yuan. What an amazing number!

Taking the business situation of Hexing packaging in 2019 as an example, the total number of 8554 employees created an output value of 11.097 billion yuan, and the per capita output value was about 1297300 yuan (the service income of industrial chain accounted for 30.67% of the total revenue, so the actual per capita output value should be about 90000); taking meiyingsen’s business situation in 2019 as an example, the total number of 4900 employees created an output value of 3392 million yuan, and the per capita output value was about 692200 yuan Taking the business situation of Yutong technology in 2019 as an example, its total number of 20446 employees has created an output value of 9.845 billion yuan, and the per capita output value is about 481500 yuan.

Finally, take a look at the main corrugated situation in Europe. As can be seen from the figure above, most of the European countries still use b-leng, and the proportion of the Czech Republic is the largest.
