American Forest Paper Association: pizza boxes can be recycled

Our goal is to answer a common question that has caused a lot of confusion in the United States: are pizza boxes recyclable? We’re here to clarify the facts.

A recent study confirmed that pizza boxes are recyclable. Grease and cheese are not a problem for the recycling process. Just take the rest of the pizza and put the box in the recycle bin.

We encourage communities to update their guidelines for residential recycling projects and explicitly accept pizza boxes that do not contain food.

The recycling of pizza boxes has already begun

Paper mills across the United States have already begun recycling pizza boxes, and the paper industry hopes to recycle more of these boxes. In the United States, about 3 billion pizza boxes are used every year, which means that about 600000 tons of corrugated paper can be recycled.

When local municipal authorities update the recycling project guidelines, they add corrugated pizza boxes, which adds another raw material and boosts the production of essential commodities. Such as cartons for transporting food and medicine, as well as toilet paper and wet paper towels.

The industry’s approximately $5 billion investment in recycling manufacturing capacity in the United States demonstrates the importance of recycling to paper and paper-based packaging supply chains.
