Amazon French order packaging tends to be recyclable

Recently, Amazon France announced that it would stop using disposable plastic bags to pack goods by the end of 2021. This change applies to small goods sold by private brands and third-party sellers using “Amazon logistics” services. Consumers currently receive orders for paper or paperboard packaging, which is easier to recycle through waste collection and treatment services. At present, these bags are made of more recycled materials, which reduces the volume of packages compared with standard cartons.

David lewkowitz, Amazon’s French logistics operation director, said: Amazon has changed the packaging requirements of the French distribution network and used sustainable paper packaging instead of disposable plastic packaging. In the future, Amazon will continue to innovate and find other sustainable materials to solve environmental problems.

From cardboard envelopes to soft paper covers, Amazon is trying to improve the durability of its packaging. Amazon uses appropriately sized packaging materials, which not only wraps the product, but also reduces the use of overall materials and increases the use of recycled materials in the manufacturing process. Since 2015, Amazon has reduced the weight of packaging materials used to transport orders by more than 36%, reducing more than 1 million tons of packaging materials, equivalent to 2 billion transportation boxes.

In Amazon’s sustainability plan, suppliers are also encouraged to design their product packaging so that it is easy to open, 100% recyclable and can be delivered to consumers without additional packaging. Amazon tests paper packaging in state-of-the-art laboratories and distribution centers around the world to determine specific measures that suppliers can take to improve their packaging and ensure that products are protected before they are delivered to consumers. Amazon also encourages third-party sellers who do not use Amazon’s distribution network to choose to use sustainable and environmentally friendly materials.

A study by Lae, an expert of Aowei consulting and logistics consulting, shows that the greenhouse gas emission generated by e-commerce is 1.5 to 2.9 times lower than that of physical retail, including the process of commodity return. At the same time, e-commerce reduces the traffic flow by 4-9 times, and the door-to-door traffic accounts for only 0.5% of the total urban traffic.

Amazon is the co-founder and first signatory of the climate commitment, which promises to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040. As part of its commitment, Amazon is expected to achieve 100% renewable energy through operation by 2025. In addition, Amazon is deploying environmentally friendly delivery solutions. To this end, it has ordered more than 100000 electric delivery vehicles, of which thousands have been used in Europe.
