According to foreign media reports, the German Federation of printing and media industries (BVDM) reported that there was a serious shortage of cultural paper in Germany. The member enterprises of the Federation could not buy paper from the suppliers at all, or had to delay the delivery date to receive the goods. The shortage of cultural paper exacerbated COVID-19′s difficulties in the media industry.
Paper supply bottleneck has increasingly become a key problem faced by many printing plants. Although in most cases, the current production is only affected to a limited extent, in some cases, the epidemic has affected 20% of the production capacity of the printing industry. More difficult, the shortage is expected to worsen in the future.
According to Dr. Paul Albert deimel, chief executive of BVDM, for some companies, after the outbreak, some orders can only be abandoned because they are unable to fulfill their agreements with customers.
BVDM is convinced that the main reason for the paper shortage is the expansion of global demand for pulp and recycled paper and the deterioration of logistics caused by the epidemic.
At the same time, the decline in demand for cultural paper has led to the shutdown of some cultural paper institutions in Germany and Europe and the decline of production capacity. Now the price competition of paper is more intense.
BVDM is worried that this shortage will accelerate the transformation from traditional printing to digitization. As the market situation is difficult to improve in the short term, the Federation believes that only by strengthening cooperation and in-depth communication can we maintain customers and regain confidence.
