Paper makers compete to develop the anti plastic wave of snack paper packaging and become business opportunities in Japan

More and more snacks and pastries will be packaged in paper to reduce the plastic waste that causes marine pollution, Kyodo News Agency reported. Japan’s major paper companies vigorously develop water and oil-resistant new materials, and strive to expand the use of external packaging from now to direct contact with snacks in the internal packaging. Paperless makes the domestic paper demand in Japan low, and the anti plastic wave is regarded as a new business opportunity.
Nestle Japan (Kobe City) changed the packaging of some “Kit Kat” chocolate from plastic to paper after September last year. Although the independent inner packaging is still plastic, the move is expected to reduce about 380 tons of plastic waste per year.
Nestle uses paper materials developed by Prince holdings. Coffee sold by Nestle in Thailand also uses paper held by Prince.
Paper is not water-resistant, oil-resistant and easy to leak out the smell, so the inner packaging with the function of preventing food deterioration will not use paper. In this regard, companies use the processing technology developed in the production of surface coating “coated paper” used in flyers and sample catalogs to develop new materials such as water-soluble chemicals on the surface of paper.
In terms of new materials, Japanese paper group’s “shield plus” has been used as the inner packaging of pancakes sold by almond, chocolate and Gifu snack manufacturers. In order to enter the European market with strong environmental awareness, we also invested 5 million euros in the factory of Finland group company, which will be ready for mass production as soon as July this year.
In February, the North Vietnam company, which has the largest market share of coated paper in Japan, announced the development of paper materials known as “panse”. In general, it needs to be processed when packaging heat sealing, but panse has the advantage of direct sealing.
