Global production and consumption of paper, paperboard and pulp
Paper and board production
In 2018, the total global production of paper and paperboard was 427.2 million tons, basically the same as 419.9 million tons in 2017. The production capacity of each variety is 19310000 tons of newsprint, down 9.6% from 21360000 tons in 2017; 96.26 million tons of printing and writing paper, down 2.1% from 98.32 million tons in 2017; 38.67 million tons of household paper, up 2.6% from 37.68 million tons in 2017; 173.29 million tons of corrugated materials (corrugated base paper and cardboard), up 1.7% from 170.31 million tons in 2017; 65.48 million tons of other cardboard, up 11.2% from 58.86 million tons in 2017. In terms of product structure, newsprint accounts for 4.6%, printing and writing paper 22.9%, household paper 9.2%, corrugated material 41.3% and other cardboard 15.6%.
In 2018, the production of paper and paperboard in the world is still the highest in Asia, followed by Europe, and North America, with the production of 19316 million tons, 10965 million tons and 8224 million tons respectively.
In 2018, China’s paper and cardboard production ranked first, the United States ranked second, Japan ranked third, with production of 104.35 million tons, 72.06 million tons and 26.07 million tons respectively.
Paper and board consumption
In 2018, the global apparent consumption of paper and paperboard was 42188 million tons, down 0.3% from 42329 million tons in 2017. The global per capita apparent consumption is 56.2kg. North America has the highest apparent consumption per capita in the world, which is 209.0 kg, followed by Europe and Oceania, which are 116.8 kg and 110.2 kg, respectively. The per capita apparent consumption in Asia is 48.0 kg, that in Latin America is 45.7 kg, and that in Africa is only 7.3 kg.
Pulp production and consumption
The total global pulp production in 2018 was 1872 million tons, an increase of 1.5% over 1844.1 million tons in 2017. Among them, the production of chemical pulp is 144.16 million tons, an increase of 1.5% compared with 142.8 million tons in 2017; the production of mechanical pulp is 27.9 million tons, the same as 27.89 million tons in 2017.
In 2018, the total pulp production in North America, Europe and Asia was 63.45 million tons, 47.04 million tons and 41.56 million tons, respectively, accounting for 34%, 25% and 22% of the total global pulp production.
In 2018, the United States, Brazil and China are the three countries with the largest pulp production, with the total pulp production of 47.14 million tons, 21.15 million tons and 17.85 million tons respectively.
In 2018, the global apparent consumption of pulp was 1866 million tons, 1.4% higher than 1839 million tons in 2017.

In 2018, the total net import volume of pulp was 34.572 million tons.
Brazil, Canada, Chile, Finland and Indonesia are the countries with a large net export volume of pulp, with a total net export volume of 34.570 million tons.
Waste paper
In 2018, the global waste paper recovery was 250.2 billion tons, with a recovery rate of 59.3%.
The country with the largest net import volume of waste paper in 2018 is China, which is 17.03 million tons, down 33.8% from 25.72 million tons in 2017. In 2018, China’s waste paper imports accounted for 62.2% of Asia’s total net waste paper imports of 27.37 million tons.
Paper and board products
Finland and Sweden are the countries with the largest net export volume of paper and paperboard. The net export volume of Finland is 9.51 million tons, accounting for 90% of the total production volume of paper and paperboard. The net export volume of Sweden and Canada is 8.56 million tons and 4.55 million tons, accounting for 84% and 45% of the total production volume of paper and paperboard respectively.
The UK is the country with the largest net import of paper and paperboard, with a net import volume of 4.43 million tons, accounting for 53.2% of its apparent consumption. More than 1 / 2 of its consumption depends on imports.
Newsprint
In 2018, Canada’s newsprint production and export volume ranked first, with a production volume of 2 million 970 thousand T and an export volume of 2 million 460 thousand T, accounting for 83% of its production. Japan’s newsprint production is 2.59 million tons, ranking second. China’s newsprint production is 1.9 million tons, ranking the third.
Printing and writing paper
The top three producers are China, the United States and Japan, with 24.55 million tons, 12.05 million tons and 7.87 million tons respectively.
Coated printing paper
The countries with high production of coated printing paper are China (7.05 million T), Japan (4.52 million T), the United States (4.43 million T), Finland (3.36 million T) and Germany (3.04 million T), respectively. Compared with 2017, the production of coated printing paper is reduced in all countries except Finland and Austria.
Corrugated material
The production of corrugated materials in China and the United States is 42.5 million tons and 34.69 million tons respectively, accounting for 25% and 20% of the total production of corrugated materials in the world. The largest net export volume of corrugated materials is still the United States, with a net export volume of 4.88 million tons.
Living paper
The production of paper for daily use is the highest in China and the United States, 9.7 million tons and 8.15 million tons respectively. The sum of domestic paper production in these two countries accounts for 46.2% of the total global domestic paper production, and the international trade volume of domestic paper is relatively small.
