China’s import and export of household paper and sanitary products in 2019

1. Paper for daily use
Import
In 2019, the import volume of domestic paper in China dropped significantly, only 31700 tons in the whole year, down 18700 tons compared with that in 2018 (50400 tons); the total import volume was 55.2277 million US dollars, down 27.86% compared with that in 2018 (76.549 million US dollars); the average import price was 1739.44 US dollars / T, up 14.60% compared with that in 2018 (1517.8 US dollars / T), showing the trend of volume reduction and price increase. Base paper is still the main import product, accounting for 70.59% of the total import volume.
Export
The total export volume of household paper was 779100 tons, up 5.59% year on year. The export volume increased by 26.07% year on year, and the average price was 3339.24 US dollars / T, up 19.39% year on year.
The export products are mainly finished products, accounting for 75.01% of the total export volume. Compared with 2018, the export volume and volume of household paper continued to grow.
2. Sanitary products
Import
In 2019, the total import of absorbent sanitary products was 188700 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 11.1% (2018: 212000 tons); the average price was 3.42% lower than the previous year. Baby diapers accounted for 89.70% of the total imports and 81.96% of the total imports.
The import volume and import volume of baby diapers continue to show a downward trend. China’s consumer demand for imported baby diapers continues to decline, which also reflects the rapid progress of China’s domestic baby diapers, which has largely met the needs of domestic consumers. The import volume of sanitary napkin / sanitary pad and hemostatic plug products was 12537.88t, up 23.63% year on year, and the average price was 13293.62 US dollars / T, down 8.23% year on year. The import volume of adult incontinence products is relatively small, showing a trend of increasing volume and price.
Japan is still the main source of China’s imports of absorbent sanitary products. Among them, the number and amount of baby diapers imported from Japan accounted for 98.21% and 97.87% respectively. The quantity and amount of sanitary napkins imported from Japan accounted for 39.59% and 33.48% respectively.
Export
In 2019, the export volume of absorbent sanitary products continued to grow steadily, with a total export volume of 879800 tons, a year-on-year increase of 16.85%, and a year-on-year increase of 14.89%. The average price of export products slightly decreased by 1.67%.
Most of the exports are general trade, the largest proportion of export products is baby diapers, accounting for 35.08% of the total exports. The United States, Japan, South Korea and other countries export more pet pads, nursing pads and adult diapers, while the baby diapers are mostly exported to developing markets such as the Philippines, Russia and Nigeria.
3. Wet towel.
Import
In 2019, the import volume of wipes decreased by 4.91% over the previous year, but the average import price continued to increase by 14.81%, reaching 2415.06 US dollars / T.
Export
The export volume and export volume of wet wipes increased by 23.18% and 27.08% respectively, and the average unit price of wet wipes for export also increased by 3.16% over the previous year.
In addition, influenced by the trade friction between China and the United States, the volume of domestic paper import trade between China and the United States has declined year on year in 2019. China’s imports of health products from the United States also decreased by 19.34%, while China’s exports of health products to the United States have been subject to tariffs since September, but the annual export volume is still higher than that in 2018. In 2019, the trade volume of wet towel between China and the United States showed an upward trend year on year.
